Historic Horticulturalist, Old Economy Village, Ambridge

Do you have a passion for gardens and garden research and love working with living plant collections? If so, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums (BHSM) is looking for a historic horticulturalist to manage the six-acre heritage landscape at Old Economy Village for current and future generations to experience and enjoy.

Old Economy Village is the historic home of the Harmony Society, one of the oldest and most successful religious communal groups of the 19th century. This six-acre National Historic Landmark welcomes thousands of visitors annually and features a modern visitor center, 13 historically significant buildings and two acres of historic gardens.

The Historical Horticulturalist is responsible for all aspects of restoring and preserving Old Economy Village’s historic gardens and landscape. The position performs professional horticultural work, including research to determine the type of plants that grew at Old Economy Village, garden planning and design, preparation, planting and care of plants, grass, trees, and shrubs, and the re-creation of gardens and landscape to resemble historical periods. The Historical Horticulturalist also assists in the development and delivery of educational programming centered on Old Economy Village’s historic gardens and landscape.

This is a professional horticultural position requiring a knowledge of 19th century gardens, and/or American garden history.

Description Our Public Engagement Representatives are part of a dynamic team whose goal is to greet and interact with Museum guests. Collections Intern, Historic Fallsington, Inc., Fallsington

Historic Fallsington, Inc. (HFI) seeks a graduate-level student or recent graduate for a temporary, grant-funded collections internship to justify the inventory of our archives collection and create accession records in the database.  

The ideal candidate is majoring in history, museum studies, decorative arts, or related fields and will be passionate about furthering our mission to share the rich culture and history of the village of Fallsington. In order to fulfill the needs of the position, the candidate must be able to navigate stairs, carry up to 20 pounds, and work independently.

Responsibilities
The Intern will begin to justify the basic archives inventory previously started of some 300+ objects in that portion of our collection.  This will include generating digital catalog records for each object in the HFI PastPerfect collections database and creating a report recommending proper storage containers suitable to the type, size, and condition of individual objects.    

The Intern reports directly to the Executive Director.   After general orientation, the Assistant will be given general direction, but is expected to perform job-related tasks independently. A laptop and other basic office equipment and supplies will be provided.

Compensation
This work can be performed part-time (approximately 21 hours per week) or full-time, depending on the availability of the student and the hours required to receive course credit, if needed.  Candidate must be able to work scheduled weekdays and/or Saturdays with any changes to be discussed in advance.

On-Water Programming Supervisor, Independence Seaport Museum, Philadelphia

Hours:  Full-time (Wednesday through Sunday); ability to work evenings in peak season (late May through early September), $35-40K

Description: The On-Water Programming Supervisor is an ambassador for discovery, learning, recreation, and safety on the waterfront at Independence Seaport Museum. The On-Water Programming Supervisor primarily reports to the Assistant Director of the Workshop on the Water. The On-Water Programming Supervisor will supervise the dock staff and instruct additional staff for on-water programming, is responsible for meeting all waterfront safety expectations, following all waterfront procedures and enforcing all waterfront policies. The On-Water Programming Supervisor is someone who balances the fun of on-water/waterfront learning and the safety and procedures required of it. There is a natural seasonality to this position: busier in the summer months with programming and summer camps, and maintenance focused in the off-season when some duties will more heavily relate to the Workshop on the Water. As expected with outdoor-centric and seasonally specific positions, the On-Water Programming Supervisor should be able to work in both hot and cold weather conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with rowing, paddling, kayaking, or other on-water activities in a supervisory capacity required
